Tested Covid positive? 10 mandatory things to keep in mind before entering private hospitals

If you are a coronavirus positive patient and need hospitalisation or institutional quarantine, it could come as a big worry. As a person who tested positive for coronavirus and opted for a private facility, I found a check-list can prove to be very handy before checking in for the long haul.

Here’s a list of things one should keep in mind before entering a private institution for coronavirus care and treatment:

1. INSURANCE: First and most important. If you chose to move to a private facility then you should check your health insurance. Cashless insurance is the best for such cases and the assured amount should be sufficient for a minimum of 7 days’ stay. The costs can go up to Rs 3.5 lakh at a good hospital. Also, if you are relying on a family floater plan or office plan then you should know how much amount you are saving for the rest of your family. Sometimes it’s difficult to add two cashless insurance policies and if you are using one, be ready for reimbursement for the second claim as you would need to pay in cash at the hospital.

2. BED AVAILABILITY: Private facilities are less comparative to the government establishments, so prepare yourself mentally for both scenarios. Consider both options and then you will have to try to convince the Covid war room or CMO office to notify the facility and get admitted. Have multiple options at hand.

3. IDs AND COVID REPORT: Don’t forget to carry all your necessary identity cards like office ID card, Aadhaar card, Covid report etc. You would require them at many places.

4. PACKING YOUR BAG: Take a hot water bottle, Giloy juice, chawayanprash and biscuits for consumption. Minimum 5 sets of clothes, soap, toothpaste and other hygiene essentials. Dry kadha powder can help boost immunity. You can also take some fruits like apple and mango that do not rot in 5-7 days. A knife, tissue paper, salt, sugar, tea bags, mug, paper plates, disposable spoons are a must. If possible, buy a small steamer for yourself as it will turn out to be a big help in case of breathing difficulties.

5. CARRY BOOKS: You will have to rest and sleep for long hours but you will still have a lot of idle time at hand. Think of turning these idle hours to your benefit. Make sure to carry your favourite books that you always wanted to read.

6. BINGE WATCH: ‘Zindagi na milegi dobara’ and also this time in complete isolation. Make sure to have a list of all your favorite shows and films etc as you will have too much time at hand to finish them. With a variety of OTT platforms at the disposal, content watching can be endless and so can be your appetite in quarantine.

7. CARRY YOUR DEVICES: Very important to carry a laptop or any bigger screens other than the phone. In case you want to write e-mails, watch TV, want to join the watch party with friends, big screen will come handy.

8. CHECK IN WITH YOUR FAMILY: While you are away at the quarantine facility, you should ensure your family is safe and doesn’t show any symptoms. So buying an Oximeter, a blood pressure measuring machine and thermometer is the most essential for the family. They should also be trained in using these devices to keep a constant check on the health. In case of any symptoms, call a doctor for consultation and put them on watch for a day or two with preventive medicines and vitamins. In case of emergency they may require to be tested.

9. DISINFECTING THE HOUSE: Don’t wait for the government disinfection facility and hire private agencies to disinfect the home either the same day or next day if the Covid result comes positive for any member in the family. In such cases, the family will also have to be quarantined for 14 days.

10. NO AMBULANCE: If you don’t want to attract much attention in the neighbourhood by calling an ambulance, request the Covid war room officer to allow you to reach the facility in your own vehicle. That is possible and you can reach the quarantine facility by yourself if you have mild and moderate symptoms.
